Yes, its all hoots mon, warm the haggis and get your kilts ready ... we're off to SCOTLAND!
(little stopover in Hong Kong on the way over and back)
Arriving in London 5am on September 1st we plan to catch a train to Lancaster at 10:30 arriving there a little after 1pm to pick up a hire car which we'll keep until Edinburgh 26 days later. ( OK that plan didn't work as we were delayed in HK for 10 hours! Instead VanHiep organised a hire car which we drove to Ambleside arriving at midnight ... a loooooong day) Van Hiep (our friend from Montreal, Canada who we met in Turkey, of course) will join us in London for our time in the Lake District. Mags, from Trelewis, Wales, will join us for a jaunt out to Islay, Fort William and Skye. After that we're on our own until Edinburgh when we'll be staying with Elizabeth who's promised to show us the "real" Edinburgh.
Basically the route is:
Ambleside in the Lake District for 3 nights
Carlisle (1)
Glasgow (3)
Islay (1)
Oban (including Mull and Iona) (3)
Fort William (2)
Skye (2)
Harris and Lewis (2)
Ullapool (2)
Invercharron (for the Highland Games) 1
Orkneys 2
Inverness - no plans really until Edinburgh
St Andrews - 4 days to fill
Stirling
Edinburgh (3)
London (1)
Hong Kong (2)
Why call it The High Road ????? For those barbarians who don't know ..... the chorus of Loch Lomond:- Oh, ye'll tak' the high road, and I'll tak' the low road, And I'll get to Scotland afore ye; But me and my true love will never meet again On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond
(the Low Road being the one taken by a soldier executed after the Jacobite Uprising in 1745)
